So You Bought Dawntrail. Now What?
So You Bought Dawntrail. Now What?
Honestly I picked up Dawntrail during the spring sale and kinda just sat there staring at the character select screen for like twenty minutes. The game throws two new jobs and a complete graphical overhaul at you before you even find the first aetheryte. And the onboarding is not great, tbh.
So let's cut through the noise. Here's what actually matters for getting started in 2026, whether you are on the Free Trial or coming back with a level 90 character collecting dust.
Pick Your Starting Point
Not everyone starts Dawntrail the same way and that is fine. If you are on the Free Trial with no expansions, just do the MSQ through Stormblood first and do not rush it. That is gonna be like a hundred to a hundred and fifty hours. Kind of a lot but the story is good.
Returning player who finished Endwalker? Jump straight into Dawntrail MSQ. You are looking at maybe forty to fifty hours if you watch cutscenes. Not too bad.
And if you bought a level 90 boost, I cannot stress this enough: spend half an hour with Hall of the Novice before touching the MSQ. The level 90 tutorials actually teach you your role mechanics properly now, way better than the ARR version ever did. Seriously, do not skip this.
New player who bought the complete edition, you are in for the long haul. MSQ from ARR, skip nothing. Two hundred plus hours. But that is kind of the point of this game.
Raider returning for Dawntrail savage, just do the MSQ plus the EX trial quests and skip side content. Twenty-five to thirty hours to endgame.
The Two New Jobs: Viper or Pictomancer?
Dawntrail added two DPS jobs and tbh they play nothing alike. You will need to decide which one to invest time in because gearing both at once during MSQ is a pain.
Viper is a melee DPS. Dual-wielding, twin blades that combine into a twinblade. Fast rotation, positional-heavy, rewards high APM. No party buffs, pure selfish DPS. Honestly it feels like a hybrid between Ninja and Monk. Best if you enjoy busy melee rotations and do not mind positionals. But Viper punishes missed positionals hard and I have seen new players get frustrated and drop it by level 93.
Pictomancer is the magical ranged DPS. Paint-based caster with a motif system that is genuinely fun. You build up canvases then unleash them for burst windows. Has a raid buff called Starry Muse so parties will actually want you. Surprisingly mobile for a caster too. Best if you like planning burst phases and want raid utility.
My honest rec if you are new to FFXIV DPS: start with Pictomancer. The rotation is more forgiving and you get a party buff so groups are happier to have you. The motif system does not feel overwhelming. Not sure about this but I think Picto might be the most beginner-friendly caster they have ever added.
And if you are a tank or healer main, neither of these is for you. Dawntrail did not add new tank or healer jobs so you are sticking with what you had in Endwalker. The good news is all existing jobs got substantial reworks. So at least there is that.
MSQ Walkthrough: Skip the Fluff
The Dawntrail MSQ is roughly forty to fifty hours if you watch cutscenes and read dialogue. I have found the pacing is kind of uneven. The first half, levels ninety to ninety-five, is slow. Lots of world-building in Tuliyollal and Urqopacha that honestly drags. The second half, ninety-five to one hundred, picks up significantly once you hit Solution Nine.
Stuff I tell friends who ask about the MSQ: watch all cutscenes in Kozama'uka and Shaaloani, these zones have the best story beats. Do not feel bad about skipping side dialogue in Urqopacha, it is mostly flavor text. The level ninety-seven dungeon is where the plot actually gets interesting. Do the role quests alongside MSQ, they are shorter than Endwalker's and give decent XP. Get flying in each zone as soon as the MSQ lets you, backtracking without it is miserable in these huge maps.
But the thing about the Dawntrail MSQ that nobody really talks about is how front-loaded the slow parts are. Once you push through the first few zones the momentum actually holds. Most people who quit seem to drop it before level ninety-five and that is a shame because the back half is legitimately good.
Leveling Multiple Jobs
So you want to level more than one job through ninety to one hundred. Fair enough but the XP curve is steeper than Shadowbringers and Endwalker were.
Your best XP sources for alt jobs: daily roulettes come first. Leveling, Alliance, and MSQ roulette give the most. Frontline roulette is also solid if you can tolerate PvP. Dawntrail hunt trains are next. Find a hunt Discord for your data center, join a train, you will get two to three million XP in twenty minutes. FATE farming in the current highest zone is decent too because bicolor gemstones are actually useful this expansion for crafting mats. Challenge log is easy to forget but the weekly bonuses add up over time. Wondrous Tails from Khloe gives half a level at ninety-plus with one line of stickers.
And yes Bozja is somehow still relevant in 2026. Not for ninety to one hundred but if you are leveling something from seventy-one nothing beats it for speed. I was kind of surprised by that.
Dungeons and Trials
All Dawntrail dungeons follow the same formula: two trash pulls between each boss, bosses have more complex mechanics than Endwalker's leveling dungeons.
Ihuykatumu at level ninety-one, the first boss poison puddles stack if ignored. Worqor Zoma at ninety-three, the final boss requires tank LB3 or it is a wipe and I have seen groups disband over this. Just tell your tank before the pull. Skydeep Cenote at ninety-five, the second boss tethers need to be broken fast. Vanguard at ninety-seven, all three bosses have body-check mechanics. Origenics at ninety-nine, healer check on the final boss so bring decent gear. Alexandria at one hundred, multiple mechanics overlap on the final boss. Valigarmanda trial at ninety-three, platform destruction pattern memorization. Zoraal Ja trial at ninety-nine, tank swap is required no exceptions.
Worqor Zoma catches a lot of people off guard still. The tank LB3 thing is not telegraphed well at all and if your tank does not know it is coming that is just a wipe. tbh they should have made that clearer.
Gearing at Level 100
Once you hit one hundred your gearing path depends on what content you are aiming for. The crafted set at item level seven hundred and ten is the baseline.
From there: item level seven twenty is tomestone gear from daily roulettes and hunts. Seven thirty is augmented tomestone plus alliance raid drops. Seven thirty-five is savage raid gear from AAC Light-heavyweight. Seven forty is augmented tomestone with the final upgrade items from savage plus alliance coins.
But tbh for most players stopping at seven twenty to seven thirty is totally fine. You can clear all normal content and EX trials comfortably at that level. Savage raiding is where you need the seven thirty-five to seven forty push.
Crafting and Gathering
Dawntrail overhauled crafting in a way that honestly makes it more accessible. The new Quick Synthesis Plus lets you auto-craft collectables and the trait system means you do not need to meld as aggressively for basic crafts.
Gatherers got the biggest quality of life change: legendary nodes now show on the minimap without needing to use an action first. Small change but it saves hours over an expansion's worth of gathering. I have maxed out my botanist and miner just because of that one change.
What's Actually Worth Your Time in 2026
With the expansion being out for a while now some content has aged better than others.
Stuff worth doing: the MSQ obviously. Normal raids from AAC Light-heavyweight are genuinely well-designed. The Arcadion alliance raid series, first wing dropped and it is a visual spectacle. EX trials for mount farming, the Valigarmanda EX mount called Wings of Ruin is still the best-looking EX mount this expansion imo. Cosmic Exploration if you craft or gather, this is the new Ishgard Restoration and it is active right now which is kind of exciting.
Stuff you can probably skip for now: FATE farming beyond what you need for gemstone purchases. Deep Dungeon is not out yet if it follows the patch pattern. Triple Triad card collecting unless you are a completionist about that kind of thing. And Eureka and Bozja if you never did them, they are still there but finding groups is harder in 2026.
And that is the thing about playing Dawntrail in 2026. You are coming in at a point where the early patch content is fully matured and most balance issues are ironed out. The community has already solved the optimization puzzles that launch players spent weeks arguing about on Reddit. Honestly it is probably the best time to start, even if you missed the launch hype...
